Yesterday I bought a Fender Stratocaster guitar. It was 250$ so I bought it from Guitar Center. Right when I got home, I plugged it in and played a chord, but nothing came out of my amplifier!
I plugged in my other Guitar and it worked, so it apparently wasn’t the amplifier’s fault..
I used 3 different cords and none of them worked, so it wasn’t the cord’s fault..
Apparently, its the guitar’s fault!
It turns out, the problem was inside the hole of the guitar where the cord goes. I have to pull the cord in a certain way to get sound into the amplifier. I’m not satisfied with this because I knew I would look silly playing while pulling the cord up with my neck..
Should I go to guitar center and replace it or what? I have the receipt still so I should be able to replace it right? This really makes me disappointed..
Hi! Yes, you can take it back to the store, but why not fix it yourself? This is an easy repair, which should take you less than 15 minutes. Simply remove the two screws holding the output jack retainer (dress plate) to the guitar body, and pull the jack assembly out far enough to check both the wiring and the jack itself. In most cases, all that is needed is to wipe a cotton swab dipped in alcohol across the contact surfaces, and then bend the sheet metal tang in slightly to make firmer contact with the plug tip. These jacks do get out-of-kilter even when brand-new, and need maintenance just like everything else on a guitar. If the wiring is broken or loose, it will need re-soldering. Make sure there is no foreign matter inside the jack that is preventing good electrical contact with the plug tip and ring. It should not be necessary to replace the jack, or take it back to the store; just clean and tweak, and you should be good to go! Best regards, Dana
