Over the years, the electric guitar has made it’s mark as an instantly recognizable, and ultra cool musical instrument. Many people all over the world dream of being able to play this fabulous instrument, but only a select few seem to have the dedication and discipline required to actually master it. To help you along in our endeavor, here are some tips on how you can start playing your own electric guitar more effectively as you strive to master this elusive instrument.
- Properly Fit Your Strings – When learning how to play electric guitar, you will start performing certain actions such as bending strings. When doing this, it is vital that the guitars strings have been put on correcty. Poorly fitted strings can lead to all sorts of tuning problems, which can be a nightmare if you’re in the middle of a song.
- Know YOUR Guitar – No two electric guitars are exactly the same, so get to know how yours responds, and how it sounds. get used to how your guitar feels to play, as well as how the controls on it can effect the sound.
- Mute Unwanted Strings – When you play the electric guitar, it is very important to mute the strings that you are not playing. When you turn up the volume those guitar strings will vibrate and ring through the amplifier and ruin pretty much any song you try to play.Threfore it is very important to learn to control this by the correct muting of strings while you are playing. The best way to do this is by touching your right hand palm gently to the string as you play.
- Scales and Licks – Learn the scales and licks that go along with electric guitar so that when you’re playing you can add a bit of flare to your songs. You should learn to understand all the notes of the scales, and how the relate to one another so that you can improvise freely while playing.
- Work On Your Vibrato And String Bending Technique – In order to sound like a real pro, you need to learn how to bend stings, as well as how to aplly vibrato to notes. Combining these techniques properly will enable you to play some very cool sounding things on the guitar. You’ll quickly learn these concepts, but will spend years if not your whole life mastering them.
While the tips listed in this article are ideal to help you learn how to play electric guitar, they are only the beginning. If you are truly serious about your new instrument you’ll need to find a good tutor or a guide to help you along the way.
